The Hartman Center holds an extensive collection of over 3,000,000 items correspondence, publications, advertisements, photographs, slides, films, books and serials that document the history of advertising, sales, and marketing over the past two centuries. In addition to the J. Walter Thompson Company Archives, the most comprehensive historical record of any advertising agency, the Center contains the collections of other key companies and individuals in the dynamic fields of advertising, marketing and sales.

3. HarpWeek Presents 19th Century Advertising

 

Images and articles about advertisements that appeared in Harper's Weekly.
Harpers Weekly was the leading illustrated American periodical during the 1857 1872 period. Its circulation exceeded 100,000 on a regular basis and reached 300,000 at times during the Civil War and its 1871 campaign to defeat Boss William M. Tweed in New York City. It is best known for the political cartoons of Thomas Nast, the illustrations of Winslow Homer, and the wood engravings of photographs by Mathew Brady. In 1870, an annual subscription cost $4.00. An advertisement cost $1.50 per line per insertion for an inside page and $2.00 for an outside page. The newspaper had 16 tabloid size pages per issue before 1870, and then increased up to 24 pages per issue.

HAT was established in 1976 by a small group of individuals who believed that the best of UK advertising should be preserved for posterity. As an educational research trust and a registered UK charity [no. 276194], its initial brief was to encourage and sponsor the study of all aspects of the growth and development of advertising. This was subsequently broadened to include the related fields of marketing, media and public relations.

7. Philip H. Dougherty Remembered

 

Tribute to Philip H. Dougherty the Advertising Columnist of the New York Times for over twenty years. Video interviews with peers and samples of radio broadcasts.
The audio section in this site is made up of radio broadcasts and speeches because it is the most vivid evocation of PHD. For the video section the interviews of advertising people were made for a video shown at an AAF award luncheon on the occasion of PHDs induction to the Advertising Hall Of Fame. The pictures are small samples that link to larger sets. The articles are about PHD, not by him. Happily his words live on in the NYT microfilm collections of most libraries.

8. Ad*Access Project

 

Provides access to digital images print advertisements published primarily in the United States and Canada between 1911 and 1957.
The Ad*Access Project, funded by the Duke Endowment Library 2000 Fund, presents images and database information for over 7,000 advertisements. Ad*Access concentrates on five main subject areas: Radio, Television, Transportation, Beauty and Hygiene, and World War II, providing a coherent view of a number of major campaigns and companies through images preserved in one particular advertising collection available at Duke University. The advertisements are from the J. Walter Thompson Company Competitive Advertisements Collection of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising, and Marketing History in Duke Universitys Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library.

Living Gold Press is located on the edge of the Klamath River in beautiful, sparsely populated far northern California. The sister owned company was formed in 1996 with the goal of publishing non-fiction books with an emphasis on regional topics. Jill Livingston and Kathryn Golden do the majority of the writing, photography, drawing, design, layout, and marketing themselves. They are part of a growing cadre of small publishers committed to quality and independence.
